Why cost per gram, not just cost per serving
Every supplement brand wants you comparing sticker prices, because sticker price hides the two numbers that actually decide value: how long a container lasts, and how much of the working ingredient each serving delivers. A $7 tube of electrolytes looks cheap until you notice it’s ten servings; a $55 collagen bottle looks reasonable until you learn each capsule holds a fraction of a studied dose.
Cost per gram of active is the great equalizer. It divides what you pay per serving by the grams of the key ingredient in that serving — so a product can be the cheapest per serving and the most expensive per gram at the same time. That’s not a trick of the calculator; it’s the exact gap our reviews keep finding. Our collagen explainer lays out one clear case: a capsule at roughly a dollar-eighty a serving delivering about 1 gram costs far more per gram than a powder at two-thirty-three delivering twenty.
So enter the dose when you can. Without it you’ll still get honest cost-per-serving and cost-per-year math — useful on its own. With it, you get the number the label would rather you never worked out.
How to use it
For each product, copy three numbers off the label or product page: the price, the servings per container, and how many servings you take per day (usually one). How do I calculate cost per serving?
Divide the price by the servings per container. A $45 tub with 30 servings is $1.50 a serving. The calculator also extends that to cost per day and per year based on your daily servings.
What is “cost per gram of active”?
It’s the cost per serving divided by the grams of the key ingredient per serving. It reveals when a cheaper-per-serving product is actually more expensive for the amount of ingredient that does the work.
Is it free and private?

Why isn’t the cheapest supplement always the best value?
Because price ignores dose. A cheaper serving of a smaller or sub-clinical dose can cost more per gram of active and do less than a pricier full-dose product. Cost per gram is the honest comparison.
A note on method
- Cost per serving = price ÷ servings per container. Cost per day = cost per serving × servings per day. Cost per year = cost per day × 365.
- Cost per gram of active = cost per serving ÷ grams of active per serving (milligrams are converted to grams). “Active” means the single ingredient you enter — for multi-ingredient formulas, pick the one you’re buying the product for.
