The short version

Spirulina is high in protein by weight and has preliminary signals for lipids and blood pressure — but at the sub-gram amounts in most greens blends, it’s neither a meaningful protein source nor a studied dose. Its vitamin B12 is largely a non-functional analog, so don’t rely on it for B12.

What it actually is

Spirulina is dried blue-green algae (a cyanobacterium) sold as powder or tablets and marketed as a protein and micronutrient source. It’s high in protein by weight (roughly 55–70%), plus carotenoids, B-vitamins and iron, and its main studied bioactive is phycocyanin, an antioxidant pigment making up about 1% of its weight.

The catch: at the small doses used in blends (often under a gram), it’s not a meaningful protein source, and its B12 is largely a non-functional analog that’s poorly absorbed — so it shouldn’t be relied on for B12. The effects that show up in research appear at gram-level doses, far more than the pinch in a proprietary greens blend.

Contamination is a real, source-dependent safety concern. Independent testing has repeatedly found lead in some spirulina products, and poorly controlled production can allow toxin-producing cyanobacteria to co-occur, introducing microcystins (liver toxins). True spirulina doesn’t make microcystins, but supply-chain cross-contamination does — which is why testing and reputable sourcing matter.

What the research actually shows

We label each use by how strong the evidence is — well-established, mixed, or weak/preliminary — and say plainly where marketing outruns the science.

Mixed Blood lipids (triglycerides, cholesterol). Trials suggest reductions in triglycerides (~10–15% in some metabolic-syndrome groups), with smaller effects on cholesterol. Reasonably consistent but mostly small studies — preliminary.

Weak / preliminary Blood pressure. Some meta-analyses show modest reductions, but studies are small, heterogeneous and higher-quality confirmation is limited.

The doses studies actually used

Human trials generally use 1–8 g/day. Condition-specific examples: lipids 1–8 g/day, blood pressure ~3.5–4.5 g/day, blood glucose ~2 g/day. Greens and superfood blends often contain a fraction of a gram — below these studied amounts.

So spirulina is a good example of the blend problem: presence on an ingredient list isn’t evidence of an effective dose, and proprietary blends that hide per-ingredient amounts make it impossible to verify how much you’re getting.
